Talanoa: Prof. Saʻiliemanu Lilomaiava-Doktor

Our Talanoa series comes out of our Marsden Project (2019-2023), 'Vā Moana: space and relationality in Pacific thought and identity'.

Saʻiliemanu Lilomaiava-Doktor is a professor at the University of Hawaiʻi, West Oʻahu. Saʻiliemanu’s research focusses on migration, transnationalism, diaspora, culture, and place, and brings an Indigenous Samoan lens to human geography. In this talanoa with Albert L. Refiti and Emily Parr, Saʻiliemanu discusses malaga (travelling back and forth), the relationship between fafo (overseas) and iʻinei (here), change and continuity in the faʻa Sāmoa, and different forms of vā practised in village and diasporic settings.
